£300,000 pledge for CCAG

Angus Council pledge £300,000

CCAG received welcome pre-Christmas news that Angus Council has agreed in principle to pledge £300,000 towards the cost of a new community hub for the Town. Members of the Corporate Services committee agreed to lease the land at the former Kinloch School playground, valued at £160,000, for a ‘peppercorn rent’. The Council has also committed an additional £140,000 subject to a positive project feasibilty outcome. Angus Council finance spokesman, Cllr Mark Salmond, believes that a new facility would greatly enhance the Town. He said “The Council and the Carnoustie Centre Action Group have been working together for some time. I am delighted that the Council has agreed to donate a part of the former Kinloch Primary School site for a new centre which, along with a substantial cash pledge, will assist the community to take this project forward. I now look forward to continuing our partnership with the action group to develop and deliver this project which will greatly enhance the quality of life in Carnoustie”.

3 Halls market success

Big turn-out for Christmas Market

CCAG’s annual Christmas Market proved a great sucess with local shoppers last Saturday. The event was held this year in three adjacent Carnoustie halls with the Comrie Hall providing a dedicated venue for the St Andrews Day Food market, whilst the Philip Hall and the Army Cadet Hall hosted craft and gift stalls.

Alison Paget of Carnoustie Centre Action Group (CCAG) said: “The St Andrew’s Day Food Market was a great success. Thanks to funding from EventScotland, the Food Market was more extensive than last year, with good signage, winter decorations and balloons.

The local producers did well, the CCAG café did a roaring business and Carnoustie Allotments Association completely ran out of soup and stovies, which proved to be just the thing for a cold and frosty day!

“The Christmas Market went exceedingly well,” continued Alison. “Organising and holding the Christmas Market involved a lot of work by many people on our committee and volunteers, but this was all very worthwhile as it enabled stallholders to showcase goods produced and/or sold locally, as well as encouraging people to visit Carnoustie and discover what our town has to offer and raising awareness of the Kinloch Centre Project, of which CCAG is the main driver.”

St Andrews Day events

ST ANDREW’S DAY TO BE CELEBRATED ACROSS ANGUS

To kick off the Angus contribution to the recently-launched Scotland’s Winter Festivals programme, Angus will be marking St Andrew’s Day – 30 November – with a series of exciting events celebrating the very best of Scotland’s traditions, culture and crafts.

The Angus St Andrew’s Day events include traditional music sessions in Carnoustie, Brechin, Monifieth and Kirriemuir from 25-30 November, a ceilidh in Monifieth on Friday, 26 November, a Christmas Market in Carnoustie on Saturday, 27 November which will include a food fair highlighting the excellence of local produce, and a St Andrews Concert in Monifieth on the evening of 27 November.

The St Andrew’s Day events are being held by a variety of local organisations. The organisers of the ceilidh and St Andrews Day concert are Tayfolk.com, while the traditional music sessions are being organised by TradAngus. The Christmas Market is being organised by Carnoustie Centre Action Group, with funds raised going towards the group’s Big Lottery Bid for funding for a new civic centre in Carnoustie. The events will be free of charge and will provide a wonderful excuse to celebrate Scotland’s patron saint while also enjoying the music and song of Scotland – and catching up with Christmas shopping!

“Angus Council is delighted to be able to offer grant support for these community run events. They will certainly ensure that the people of Angus and visitors to the area have a memorable St Andrew’s Day,” said Councillor David May, the council’s economic development spokesperson.

Paul Bush OBE, Chief Operating Officer, EventScotland, who are supporting the ceilidh, food fair, concert and traditional music sessions, said: “We are delighted that the county of Angus is participating in Scotland’s Winter Festivals programme. These events are a sensational way to kick off the winter season and are fantastic example of Angus’ contribution to making Scotland the perfect stage for events.”

Christmas Market preparations underway

3 Halls Christmas Market Plan

Preparations are underway for this year’s Christmas Market which will be held in the 3 halls adjacent to the Kinloch School site:

Details of event

  • Saturday 27th November 2010, Christmas Market near the Kinloch Centre  site in Dundee Street, Carnoustie
  • Timings – Open for setting up at 9am and until 3pm for packing up.  The Market opens 10am until 2pm
  •  Limited parking areas for use by stallholders may be available.
  • There will be a little outside space and 3 nearbye halls have been booked to accommodate the weather. The Comrie Hall will be used for serving of refreshments and use of the Hall’s toilets, the Philip Hall and the Black Watch Cadet Hall, also nearby are booked.

Information about Your Pitch

  • The number of pitches is not restricted- the 3 halls plus a small open air site   offer a large area altogether but there is already a demand for stalls so it is important to book early to avoid disappointment. Stallholders are responsible for the safety of their goods.
  • ·         Tables & chairs may not be provided. So each stallholder is responsible for providing their own table(s). Any tables or displays should be within the area allowed (ie 6ft square) If more space is required then an additional pitch(es) must be booked.

And  finally…

  • There will be stalls, farmer’s market, events, bands and choir, a strolling Santa; festive fayre on offer and coffees and teas at the Comrie Hall which also has toilets.
  • ·         This event also falls within St Andrews Week so how about thinking ‘Scottish’ or local to showcase our excellent local talent? We have applied for money for Scottish bunting and signs but you could also add to this.
  • Lastly to show a true festive spirit battery lights and glitter would set the scene. Dressing up is part of the fun of the day and makes for interesting photographic opportunities! So please feel free to dress up in jolly, Christmassy or Scottish clothes.
  • Emergency cover for First Aid by the Red Cross will be in attendance all day.

IF YOU REQUIRE MORE INFORMATION OF A BOOKING FORM – PLEASE GET IN TOUCH

Kinloch Centre fund-raising drive launch

Kinloch Project launch

A packed British Legion on Monday evening saw the Launch of the Kinloch Centre Fund Raising Drive.

Residents, Business Owners and Volunteer Leaders of many of Carnoustie’s activity groups gathered to hear the Centre’s plans for the future.

“If the Building we need is going to cost around £2 million pounds to build then the folk of Carnoustie including businesses and other organisations will need to make a credible contribution so that major funders such as the Big Lottery and other big potential sources of money will back the project” said Chairman Rodger Brunton.

“For that reason, we feel a realistic target over the next 2 years is to raise £100,000 from the Community”.

“We know it’s a challenge but it can be done. Smaller places than Carnoustie have managed it and I think we have enough Community spirit to do it”.

The meeting was shown a slide show including proposals for accommodation to be provided based on local survey research but reminded that it’s not finalised and ideas are still needed.

Ways of helping the project were also discussed and future plans will include a request to every Carnoustie business to get involved as well as individuals and societies. The tremendous support to date from Angus Council was acknowledged by the whole Committee.

Alison Paget, Vice Chairman, said “So far we’ve had people donating services and skills which in turn can raise cash for the fund. Jim Dunbar’s sketches have helped raise over £500 so far!”

The ‘Friend of the Kinloch Centre’ card was launched at the evening where for a one off payment of £5 the project will start gathering the necessary core of support for the Big Lottery application.

“We will be going out to ask Local Architects for their involvement in the next month or so. A small group of them will then be asked to propose concept designs for one to be developed into a Planning Application before Christmas” said Chairman Rodger Brunton.

“Exciting times ahead, that’s for sure”

Local councillors Peter Murphy and Helen Oswald receive their ‘Friend’ cards from Rodger.
